Have an inventory session. Decide what to move and what not to move.
Schedule a garage sale for items you don't want to move. Donate other items to charitable organizations. (Remember to get a receipt for your tax records.)
Arrange for packing. We recommend that you have Greater Bay northAmerican agent do it for you. If you decide to pack yourself, be sure to to buy special cartons you'll need. A Relocation Services agent can provide the information and selection you'll need.
Gather personal records: medical, dental, school, birth, baptismal, marriage, etc. Arrange to send transcripts of school records in advance to new schools.
Arrange with employer to forward Federal Witholding forms.
Close local charge accounts such as the department store.
Transfer checking and savings accounts.
Arrange for shipment of pets and plants. Get immunization records for the pets.
Have appliances serviced for shipment. Defrost refrigerator and freezer. Arrange for disposal of frozen foods (sell, give away, or eat). Clean range.
Throw out or give away all flammables (paints, paint removers, etc.) that will be impossible to move.
Pack items to be carried in car . Label "Do Not Move".
Gather valuables from safe deposit box, drawers, jewelry cases, personal records. Pack safely to take with you in the car.
Send clothing, drapes, curtains, rugs out for cleaning. Leave in the cleaner's wrapping. Take down curtain rods, shelves, TV antennae.
Pack items you'll need first in your new home. Label "Load Last, Unload First".
Have car serviced for trip.
Make arrangements for trip (hotel/motel reservations, routing, etc.).
Pack suitcase(s) for trip. Strip beds. Leave one contour sheet on each mattress.
Moving day: Stand by to check items on inventory sheet.
Make sure that all windows are closed. Closets empty. Lights out.
Make Arrangements to "Discontinue Service" and Mail "Change of Address" Cards To Checklist
